What the Difference Between a Psychologist & Psychiatrist

The terms "psychiatrist", and "psychology" are often used interchangeably by most people. It is important to realize that these terms have different meanings. The debate over these terms leads to confusion, which can lead to people not knowing who to seek help from. This article will clarify the differences between psychiatrists or psychologists. The suffixes in terms are where the first differences lie. The suffixes in the terms can make a difference. For example, "-iatry", which refers to medical treatment, and "-ology," which refers to psychology's science. This means that a psychiatrist is someone who diagnoses and treats medical conditions, while psychology studies the psyche.

These parameters can also vary depending on the field of education. This is what is required to gain the knowledge in the following fields. A psychologist could study for between five and seven years, depending upon their graduation and the post graduate course. But psychiatrists are medical doctors by profession. Individuals who complete clinical psychology research earn a PhD, or a PsyD degree. The psychologist's title can only be used once the psychologist has completed his studies, research, internship and tenure. Some psychologists also use the terms counselor or therapist to identify themselves in the social field. A psychiatrist would also undergo training in the areas of addiction, children, drugs abuse, and adulthood.

The second difference is that a psychologist cannot recommend medication to a person. They cannot prescribe medication to a patient. Instead, they can use psychotherapy and counseling to treat it. A psychiatrist may use counseling, psychotherapy and medications to treat patients. People are misunderstood to believe that psychiatrists can heal severe mental illness while psychologists can treat mild conditions. This is false. This is false. A psychiatrist can only prescribe medication to a psychologist.

The psychologist will use a range of evaluating tests to determine personality disorder. The same exam tools can be used by the psychiatrist to assess the severity and condition of the disease.

It is important to understand the differences in these terms so that you can choose the right person for treatment. A professional psychologist would still be able treat the condition. The fundamentals are the same. The major difference lies in the ability of a psychologist to prescribe medicine. This can only be done through a psychiatrist. You can find psychologists in almost all social situations, including colleges and schools.Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.
